Ok, this is my first ever question to aks on here, but i really need other peoples opinion.

In September i will be applying for Liverpool Instatute of Performing Arts, Acting degree.

We have to perform two drama peices AND a sing from a musical, i have had 6years of professional singign lessons, howver my singign teacher thinks i should do something like 'Happy Talk' from South Pacific, which, yea, i do not like. We have been practising 'Wizard and I' from Wicked, which i love, however, according to her i shouldnt do it!

so, i want your opinion on songs. I want to a do a really unusual song that i can also act with, something that is going to show range (as i have a range of just under 5 octaves) and a song i can belt.

Anything would be great, thanks!

  1. Great question! Ok, well first of all I'd highly recommend you spell check your posts before submitting them, especially if it's regarding a university. You spelt every five words wrong and it will look unprofessional in the future (in any field you choose). Next, I'd highly suggest you find a new voice teacher. If she wants you to sing/audition with songs from shows that are currently on Broadway, you need to dump her. It's a general rule that songs should never be used for auditions until they've had about a year off Broadway.

Now, regarding your audition, you need to set your songs and your monologues (I’m guessing that's what you meant by drama pieces) together. You need to provide the college with four different versions of you (or characters you could potentially play.) The first is you. You need to be charming and they need to see that you have a fantastic, workable personality. Next, they will need to see 3 completely different characters for your dramatic scenes and song and all in rapid succession. You might choose to do a dramatic scene first, followed by an upbeat, fast-tempo song, and then rounding it off with a dry-style comedic monologue. You simply need to have three different styles.

Now, I believe you wanted to focus on song choices so here are a few suggestions.

If you can handle The Wizard and I, I’m guessing you have a fairly high belt. So if you’re looking for a dramatic and amazing song, you might want to look into Astonishing from Little Women. It's done here and there, but it truly is an amazing song with a lot of different emotions. Other dramatic songs I would suggest are Christmas Lullaby (Songs for a New World), and See I'm Smiling or Climbing Uphill (The Last Five Years). As far as comedic songs go, the majority of the songs from The Last Five Years are hilarious (summer in Ohio, I Can Do Better than That, among others). You could also sing something like Shy from Once upon a Mattress or even Privilege to Pee from Urinetown: The Musical. As you can see, I'm a big fan of Jason Robert Brown, but, again, it's your choice and you need to choose songs that contrast and fit you best.

At any rate, good luck with your audition and I wish you only the best. Hopefully I was helpful and I'm sorry for the slight rudeness in the beginning :(. I hope you get into the college of your choice and achieve everything you believe in!
