The federal bureaucracy has grown so large. The complexity of our society together with economic globalization may require an even larger bureaucratic government.

The 9/11 attack has caused concern with agencies controlling intelligence; hence the creation of the Homeland Security Department--a new cabinet position. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/2030838.stm

The Special 9/11 Commission Report addresses both the 9/11 attack and also makes recommendations for reorganizing the Intelligence Community. See:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/nation/911report/911reportbychapter.html

and click on Executive Summary of the Report, the failures and Recommendations are noted towards the bottom of the document. Which recommendations do you agree with? Disagree with?

What are some of the roles of the federal bureaucracy and what is one benefit associated with bureaucracy as well as one of the problems with a growing bureaucracy?

Presidents rely heavily on their Cabinet secretaries for important decisions concerning public policy. How many cabinet positions currently exist? What are they and who occupies the position of "Secretary" in each? See: The Cabinet

The President also has a large Executive Office of the President (EOP) and numerous semi-independent agencies at his disposal. http://www.firstgov.gov/Agencies/Federal/Executive.shtml
