  1. drive the car to autozone ask one of the guys to listen and hook up to the computor its free. they are usually eager to add their opinion

  2. Check with your friends and see if they know of a good mechanic that can check it over.

  3. you have some good answers ..but....anyone buying a car should have it inspected..that's a very good idea on your part...but where to get this done is  not so easy to answer..there are a  series of tests by an organizationn called car carecouncill...or c.c.c.that's the standard of car inspections in the industry today.....its around a hundred to one hundred fifty dollars to have this series of test done...but when all the tests are completed you will know every thing that's wrong with this car including a car facts report..there's not enough time to tell you every thing they check for ..but at our shop it takes an hour to an hour and a half and is a major complete inspection of all componentss and systems...when done you will know exactly  whats wrong and how much to repair every item...u can use that knowledge as a barganing tool ....no opinions,no guess,no maybes or mights just the truthful facts.......if u are buying a later model car that is costing thousands.its worth a hundred to know what u are buying..don't cheap out on the inspection and in a month or so have to spend money on repairs.... that if you knew about them you could of ..not bought the car...or made the owner fix them before you bought....so.....go into your negotiations  with some intelligent information....get your car inspected by a pro......  another site is automobile inspections llc ....but no matter who does it make sure they are "ase certified" .

  4. Briana, I always tell people when looking for a mechanic, ask everyone. Ask people you know where they take their cars. Ask your co-workers, ask people you go to church with, ask your friends, ask your friends parents.

Don't just ask them where they take their cars, ask them why the take their cars to a particular shop.

Once you have found a good shop, yes then take your used car to have it looked at. Don't be afraid to say to the service adviser "Mr and Mrs smith highly recommended you, and suggested that I have you look at a car I want to buy"

This makes the shop well aware they could upset a minimum of a new customer and a regular customer if they provide you with lousy service.
