Hello all. I recently came into a few thousand dollars. As I am only 20, and living at home, I have no bills.

I have not had a bike since I was 16. I always loved cycling, but I just never had the money for a decent bike and my parents refused to help me out, which is fine. Bikes are expensive.

Anyway, I want a road bike and a mountain bike so I have it all covered. I am willing to spend upwards of a thousand on each. I know I'm not a pro, but I would like a bike I can get good on and keep for years to come.

I know nothing about which brand. I know Trek and Specialized and all, but I figure if they were that top of the line, wouldn't all the pros be using them? Make some recommendations, please.

  1. for the mountain bike i think you should look at a Santa cruz Heckler there are great bikes and are a really great ride, but it's also personal choice so when you are looking at bikes ask if you an have a quick ride around on it and as for the road bike have a look at trek bikes

  2. Go to the bike dealer and try each one out.  Find out what size fits in each a road bike and a mountain bike.  You don't need to spend a grand on a mountain bike.  Once you know what you want see if you can find a good used one and save some money.

  3. I personally, ride bmx bike...

I don't wanna show off, but i do bmx competition's and i am really good. i have found out that every ''complete'' bike you buy even the best of the best worth 9999 billion dollar's... what ever the bike, it is never perfect nor good enough.

i say your best bet is to build your bike from scratch. you have the money, it dosent take time (i can remove all the ting's and put them all back in 20mins) and building a bike from scratch is very good, since you get to know your bike, you can always repair every ting by your self, no more bike shop...

another good part of building a bike (the reason why i do it) is that you can put your favorite piece's on, example you like a certain kind of tire, you want a better seat, some other kinds of handlebar's (longer shorter) a frame that fit's your height and weight, etc...  everything on a bike is a personal choice. something that fit's you. some people like bigger sized handlebar's, or suspension here but not there... etc.. 36spoke's or 48...  there endless ting's..

the only down side of building your own bike is money, it cost aloth of money if you plan on getting good part's ! but you seem to have aloth of money. (couple thousend) so you could do it. chek some Mountain bike or road bike mailorder's  ( a good bmx mailorder is www.danscomp.com )

i know my awnser isent awsering your question, i don't know many road, mountain bike compagny's all i know is bmx...

but i hope i still helped.

  4. Well i've been cycling for a long time and i recomend a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike. The bike that i have is called the Gary Fisher kaitai. Its a great bike cause its in between both styles of bikes. The tires ar thin like a road bike but have lots of treads like a mtb. The shocks also have a lock out so you can turn of the shocks when your riding on the road. It also has disc brakes. But if you want two i recomend a road bike made by Trek or Specialized. And for a mountain bike, a Trek, Gary fisher, Kona, Specialized.

  5. for mountain if you want full suspension get the trek fuel ex 5.5 which is about 1300$, as for hardtail get the giant xtc 1 which is about 900$.

now for road get either the giant ocr 1 for about 1200$ the trek 7.6 fx for about 1100$

i wouldn't get a hybrid like somebody else advised you to because they are neither a road bike nor a mountain bike. sure you'll save some cash but its performance is not up to par.

  6. I don't know a whole lot about road bikes, but I know Cannondale has some great frames, and Litespeeds are top notch (really nice frames), and Titus are another high end company.

As far as mountain biking, you didn't mention what you intend to do with the bike (XCish stuff/racing, AM, FR, Slopestyle, DH), but shall I assume that you'd be doing cross country and all mountainish riding?  I love my Santa Cruz Heckler because it handles all of my shenanigans, but you might also want to look at the Specialized Pitch or Enduro, Norco Fluid, Rockey Mountain Slayer, Kona Dawg, Giant Reign, ect...

And pros such as Lance Armstrong and Cam Mcaul ride for Trek, and Darren Berrecloth (sp?), and Kyle Stait ride for Specialized.
