Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a camcorder to me. I cant decide on what one to choose, so I was wondering if anyone knew a good camera is pretty durable. It would need

-to have a stable recording media - this camera would be run around with and qute a bit (prefer to stay away from MiniDV)

-have VERY good nightshot/night vision capablities - night use will be the main function of this camera

-have decent picture quality

-not be too big

-be $850 USD or under

-when it comes to brand, I don't really care

Any input would be great. Thanks!

  1. MiniDV tape provides the best available video quality because DV (and HDV if you record high definition) do not compress as much as other media (hard drive or flash). DVD based camcorders are the worst and will not be discussed/mentioned any further.

You will not find "VERY good nightshot/night vision capabilities" in a camcorder in your price range - if you need the video to be in color. The only option you might have would be the Sony camcorders with "Super NightShot" mode which uses a built-in infrared emitter... and means you captured video is monochromatic (green/white, not black/white).

If "Super NightShot" is acceptable to you, then the HDR-HC7 or HC9 fit. They both also have an external mic jack and full manual audio control.

Since you know you will be "running around a bit", you really don't want to do a hard drive based camcorder. Bumping the camera hard when the hard drive is spinning will cause you problems. This means the only other option is a flash memory camcorder - the Sony HDR-CX7 and it is outside your price range.
