  1. Don't spend a lot of money.  I started playing almost 10 years ago and my first set was from Wal-mart.  I was just learning the game and needed some equipment.  Once I got the basics down, I invested in some better equipment.

  2. All makers usually make a begginers clubs, some or more forgiving than others.  I think that Adams, Calloway or Ping is the best for a beginner.  If your BF is extra tall or short than bring him to the store to get them (will need a bit of fitting)  If he is of normal stature than you can suprise him.

Best bet (if price is consideration)  Look for used sets of ebay or at your local golf shop.

The name brands for begginers you should look for:

Adams:  Any of there clubs good for new golfer

Callaway:  Big Bertha, X18 or X20

    Ping:  G-5, G-2 or G-10.

    Nike: Slingshot

Try to avoid: For better player, may frustrate him.

Titlest, Mizuno, Taylormade,  or anything club made by any company called a "Blade"

  3. For a starter set, just go to Walmart or Sears or some place reasonable and get him a decent set. Then get him a Gift cert to a small public course or a par 3 course. And tell him to enjoy himself. Golf can be very frustrating but also a lot of fun.

  4. Don't just surprise him with a set. Either take him to a store that will help fit him to a set or get a gift cert. for him to go. Just buying clubs off the shelf will be a guess and probably a waste of money. Getting the right shaft to fit the golfer is more important than the looks of the club.

  5. Adams Tight Lies set.

Its probably the best "set" of clubs that come in a boxed set.

I also believe they've updated the set, so there are two different versions.

It will run you about $399.
