  1. As already said Cradle Mountain and lake St Clair are both beautiful places and have lots of rustic options and open fires.

You could also look at Strahan on the west coast, Bicheno or Coles Bay in Freycinet , Bruny Island just south of Hobart or the Coal River valley near Richmond (30 mins from Hobart), theres lots of holiday rental accommodation available and good value at this time of year as well and wonderful old pubs and B&Bs

    http://www.discovertasmania.com/ has lots of info

  2. It'll be freezing, but if you get a cozy place it'll be great! I've spent a number of cold, yet very memorable stays in Tassie.

If you won't have car you'll pretty much have to stay near or in Hobart/Devonport/Launceston (you'll be landing in one of these places!)

If you have car and you arrive from Devonport or Launceston, then Cradle Mountain will have some nice places. There are some really nice walks you can do, and the Cradle Mountain Lodge has great hearty pub food and meals. (Cradle Mountain lodge is pretty upmarket if you can afford to stay there. They also have a fab looking restaurant (4star?) inside. They also have a swish spa facility close by that you could book into for a massage or beauty treatment). Else there's lots of other accommodation options there.

I really like Lake St Clair too. There's accommodation within the boundaries of World Heritage listed land which makes it a bit more special. I think it's the Lake St Clair Wilderness Resort. The cabins are environmentally friendly, and our cabin had a log fire.

I'd recommend you check out the Tourism Tasmania website for the lowdown on these places, or do a Google search.

Wait til you see the stars at night! They are incredible there!

  3. Go to Cradle Mountain. It's beautiful there at the moment. We were going this weekend, but unfortunately our plans didn't work out. We are heading down there on the 25th now.
