  1. Rent a cube van from any of the rental agencies. U-Haul may be the cheapest. But a cube van will accommodate two bedrooms worth of stuff.

  2. You do not need an endorsement on your licence for a larger truck, if it should be needed.   You can legally drive a 24 foot truck or a cube van.

These are available at most major rental agencies, and they will advise you of weight limits on the specific vehicles..

Most agencies offer one-way rentals between large cities, and both Ottawa and Toronto qualify there.

Speak to a  major rental agency, such as Hertz, National, Budget, etc. and ask specifically about their one-way rates

You can expect to pay a little more, but it will be a LOT cheaper  than your returning the vehicle to Toronto.

Look at ALL the details carefully. For example, U-Haul advertises very low daily rates, but their mileage charges may be 50% to 100% more than some others. Add up all the charges and fees and the total costs will very often exceed that of other agencies.

Also look at the age and condition of the vehicle you will be renting. Vehicles from the majors will probably  be not more than a couple of years old, and quite reliable. Some may have trucks that are five to ten years old and in poor condition.

My last experience with U-Haul was an eight-year old truck that was definitely in poor condition. When it failed to start because of worn-out batteries and a poor charging system they refused to let me call anyone to repair it unless I wanted to pay for it myself,  because they have their own repair trucks.

Unfortunately, their dispatchers are all in USA and they have to contact the trucks by telephone, not necessarly by cellphone, but at their local base..

Despite my many phone calls to their service line that were answered  by U-Haul at different cities in USA, and their many promises of "just another few minutes", it  took more than five hours for their repair truck to get to Richmond Hill, Ontario,  and then a bit longer to replace the batteries. That made me two hours late returning the truck to the Toronto store, where  they added extra time charges to my bill because I had no invoice to prove the truck had broken down, or for how long,  and the local stores have no contact with U-Haul's own USA-based dispatchers!

    I do not recommend U-Haul.
