I have a recipe for fried green beans. The batter calls for 1 cup beer and 1 cup flour. I don't have any beer on hand. What can I substitute for the beer?

  1. You can use tonic water, seltzer, anything that's carbonated.  Or you can whip some egg whites till soft peaks, and use that - the results won't be the same, but you just need something to lighten the batter.

  2. Drink soda

  3. The first poster was partially correct.   I would use seltzer or club soda.  Tonic or any other soda with sugar will ruin your recipe.

If you don't have any seltzer use plain water and add a teaspoon of baking powder

  4. For a batter

    chicken broth

    beef broth

    tonic water

    seltzer water

    zima

    wine cooler

    wine spritzer

    sparkling apple cider

    sparkeling grape juice

  5. beer is what makes the flavor for batter in this recipe, if you are underage get some NA beer, or get another recipe.

    good luck
