I know that's not a lot of money, but it's all I can afford right now. Any suggestions as to what type of car (model, make, etc) to get would be helpful. I don't care what it looks like as long as it runs and gets ok (more than 20) MPG. I'm going to look on craigslist. And i'm thinking of getting a toyota.

  4. My answer is;

    Being in PA. your biggest problem will be rust. Look for 80's Honda's, Subaru's or Toyota's (Best cars made in the 80's) then Nissan aka Datsun. If you come across a 70's Mercedes (Gas engine). These are Tanks, and they run forever. Great comfortable ride and last for 100's of thousands of miles. As these were owned by adults that didn't want to race anybody. My 1978 280E 4 dr. (paid $1,000 for Mr. MaGoo) has 250,000+ miles on it. Starts perfect, drives great and rocks with my newly installed Kenwood stereo. (I just wish the stock steering wheel was a little smaller.)

    Do Not Buy a 80's Hyundai, or a pre-89 Escort. (newer then that they're O.K. cars) In fact I would not look at any American made car from the 80's (except a Buick Grand National Turbo V6 for a collector)

    And if you buy a Yugo (even if they Give it to you), I will personally ride across these United States just to do a wheelie on my Harley across the roof of it. This will spare you the pain and suffering from breaking down somewhere you don't want to be.

    Best bet is Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Nissan/Datsun or pre 1980 Mercedes or VW bug/Bus (Vanagons had electrical problems)

    Those are your best bet in my humble opinion.

    Remember, All car makers have made POS's. So were just more prolific at it then others (aka Yugo made nothing but c**p cars).

    Good Luck Kid!

    Hope my answer helps.
