We have Wheat, barley, rye, and nut allergies in our home. Our children would like a hamster however all the feeds I have found (lab blocks or store feed) have one of the allergens we are avoiding. Anyone have any advice on making a homemade mix or know of a mix that would work for us.

For those wondering - the issue with the allergies would be related to contact outbreak on the childs skin. thank you

  1. Wheat, barley, rye, and nuts are some of the main staple foods to give a hamster a complete nutrition. You might have to try making your own food (which could be a mix of seeds, grains, nuts) or consider another pet.

  2. Well you could give them fruits and veggies for treats but not too much due to diarreah! They can also have, Cooked Plain Brown Rice, Dog Biscuits (No Garlic, onion, or onion powder), but hamsters shouldn't really be given too much sweet stuff! Also you can make your own hamster food here is a site to make it but you might want to check the supplies over, http://www.ehow.com/how_4423636_make-own... and Typical ingredients of a dried hamster mix, is corn, maize, dried peas, sunflower seeds, locust beans,  alfalfa, dried fruit.  Tofu is an ideal food, or treat for hamsters: Tofu is made from coagulated soy milk, and is very beneficial to nursing moms and young pups. Tofu is low in calories, high in iron, calcium, and protein. And a hamster diabetic way is to make it is Sunflower seeds Flax seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Dry Lentils and instructions, Mix all of these ingredients together. You can seal this in a bowl with a lid or something that bugs cannot get into. Add additional items that your hamster likes. Feed your hamster. You can put in fruits or vegetables when you feel like it, but make sure you take out the fruit after 24 hours. I am sorry I cannot find hamster food you can buy but goodluck makeing some if you get one, but your hamster might not be that healthy also again check those ingredients!

  3. There really isn't any mix that doesn't include at least one of those. The only way you could pull this off would be to compromise with a different animal or pick out the things that have the wheat/barley/rye/nuts in them.

    Good luck.

  4. no there isnt something you can buy or make that would supply your hamster with proper nutrients without those ingredients. when youre feeding your hamster use a spoon instead of touching the food directly. wash your hands after you feed your hamster too.

  5. you could try and make a homemade hamster mix without those products but I'm sorry to say your hamster would not be that healthy and most probably die within 1-3 months, hamsters need these kinds of things to supplement their, unless you could tough out the allergies you might want to consider another pet, I know it's hard hammies are so cute...

  6. I am really sorry but I think a different pet would be better. You can make your own hamster food but the hamster probably won't live very long w/o wheat or any of those other things you said. I would probably get a different pet but it might be hard to find a pet that doesn't need wheat or any of those other stuff. Almost all dog foods have wheat Well i don't know about the soft dog foods but almost all of the dry dog foods have wheat. And i don't know about cat food it's been a long time since I had a cat. But good luck with whatever you do!

  7. no, not withput suffering a hamsters nutiton. comercial feeds are formulated the way they are to provide optimum nutrition, messing with this will mess up the nutrition enpugh to cause damage.

  8. if u make a mix of fruits and vegies it will be fine and live for up to 3 years
