Need a window or balcony on Alaskan Cruise?

I plan to take an Alaskan cruise. My husband and I are on a budget, and are trying to figure out if the balcony or window is a "must have". We want to take Celebrity, and I am thinking the MOST we can afford is to have a window, but it may be impossible to have a balcony. I have heard people say that you just HAVE to have a balcony on an Alaskan cruise. Is there anyone who has been on an Alaskan cruise and been in an inside room?

In my opinion, you do not HAVE to have a balcony, especialy if it's just the two of you.  A lot of people bunk together in one cabin and it can get cramped, so having a balcony gives the illusion of more open space and less cramped quarters.  Will you be in port a lot or out on the ocean?  If your cruise is port intensive, you won't really be on the ship or in your room much anyway, so save the money and use it for excursions in stead.  But if you have a lot of time sailing at sea where you'll have more time in your room, then I say get an ocean view but no balcony to save some money.  Sometimes, they may upgrade you to an oceanview room if there's room.

we went on holland america............the balcony was soooooo worth the price.  we sat and watched the whales every morning over coffee and the beautiful views without having to run out on the deck.  later we could head out for breakfast and the days activities having already seen so very much!  we could also watch the late sunsets alone in the quiet.

If on a budget, go with outside room.  I have cruised to Alaska twice, once with Princess and once with Celebrity. When we had the inside room, we tended to oversleep as it was nice and dark and no daylight to wake you.  On the other hand, the outside room we had would get the morning sun coming in a bit, enough to wake us and gave us the opportunity to check the weather for the day and also indulge in Alaska's beauty.   Also, if on a budget, look for cruises sailing RT out of Seattle or Vancouver as you can buy the airfare on your own and the airport and cruise terminals are usually a quick cab drive away. You will save a considerable amount over buying the cruises airfare/transfers.  Enjoy your cruise!

I wouldn't recommend it, especially if you're on a budget.  For one thing, you'll only spend the nights in your room.  I can almost guarantee that you will be somewhere else on the ship during the day anyway so it seems like a waste of money.  Plus, in Alaska, the sun goes down at 11 at night then comes back up at 3:30 in the morning.  It makes it kind of hard to sleep with all of the sunlight.

the Carnival Spirit was made with more balconies than most ship just for trips like Alaska, I have not been yet but I now a lot who ave and they loved their balcony, that is the way I would go.

      You are not in your room that much to justify paying the extra fee. A window or balcony only show a one sided view. You are better of on deck where you can see things all over plus if someone sees something they point it out.

        I have been on 20 cruises to Alaska and always ask for an inside room. Plenty of room and they do have electric so light is not an issue.

         You will see sites than are amazing & meet people from all over the world.
