Need advice/Kawaskai Vulcan repair?

I have an '88 or '89 Vulcan 1500. It sat for over a year, waiting to have the starter fixed. After it was fixed, I rode it maybe 20 miles and then it started hammering/knocking/tapping/banging down in the engine somewhere. After 2 minutes of that, the engine shut down. I let it cool for 5 minutes and it started back up and in another 2, the hammering got so bad the engine quit again. I had plenty of coolant and oil in it.

I was thinking it was a bent rod, but why would it make the engine shut down? Any thoughts on where I should focus my attention?

  2. Things get plugged up when they sit for a long time- fuel turns to c**p and dirty oil into a kind of grease. Check the fuel delivery system.
