Question:

Need advice choosing skates?

Hello!

My daughter, who is 11, started ice skating a year ago and is now at the freestyle level. We need to buy her new skates as the ones she has are getting too small. She had the Riedell blue ribbon. What would be our best bet if we want them to last a bit and to be comfortable for her skating level. Thanks for your help,

Renee

  1. I would suggest talking to her coach for proper boot selection, but it sounds like a Riedell Silver or Bronze medallion would suit her good. Good luck!

  2. I don't know if your daughter is jumping yet,but I think that you should maybe get either the bronze, silver, or gold medallion. They are the next level up from the blue ribbon. You should probably get the coronation ace blade. I have the silver star boot and the coronation ace blade(I think it is a pretty good blade). I am doing double jumps, but I don't know what level your daughter is at. The silver star is a pretty good boot, but if she is just learning you might want to get a little simpler of a boot. Just so you know I know a skater that broke a gold seal blade. They bend easily. Anyway, I hope I could be of some help.

  3. maybe jackson skates.

  4. If she's comfortable in the Riedells, I'd stick to those.  If not, try another brand such as Jackson.  A good skate fitter can recommend the right boot for her, taking into consideration her level and her height & weight.  The latter is really important - a 130 lb 11 year old would need stiffer boots than an 80 lb 11 year old.  If you don't have a fitter, ask your daughter's coach or other skaters' parents where they go.

Coronation Ace is always a good lower freestyle blade - I have those:)

  5. If she was happy with the Riedells, I'd stay with them, just go up a level in boot strength.  Now that she's in the freestyle levels, she'll need a little more ankle support for jumping and spinning.  Try the medallion or star series, which are going to be stronger than the ribbon series.  You can check riedellskates.com and they have a recommendation chart for their boots/blades in correlation to the level the skater is at.  Since Riedells worked for her in the past, I wouldn't mess with success and just move up to the next level.  :)
