We had the transmission fluid & filter changed on our 03 tracker..Mechanic put 4 qts to much we noticed the smoke & smell took it right back probably put about 20 miles on car during this ordeal...They drained it cleaned underneath & said we should be alright, now I am worried because I am being told that this is going to cause us problems later...Any advice would be greatly appreciated....Thanks.....

  1. 4 to 5 quarts is about right for this tracker, over filling will cause tranny damage.

  2. what kind of problems do you anticipate later.  You can sue the people that did this to you, take them to small claims court perhaps, but when the judge ask the questions what kind of problems do you anticipate later, what are they going to say.  Its an unknown.  You're probably ok, but that's not to say you are.  Good catch on the fluid.

  3. long term damage would more than likely not occur unless it was never drained and you are still riding with too much tranny fluid. ive overfilled my 04 explorer and it smoked a little and got it drained and 4 years later my tranny is still golden lol. if any damage were to occur than file a report and have them pay to get yours replaced.

  4. there is a vent tube that will push out alot of the excess fluid. overfilling it makes the trans work alot harder and can blow out transmission seals. if it was corrected as you said you shouldn't have any problems.

  5. if they drain it more likey you wil be ok

  6. You will be OK here. The fluid was likely pushed out of the vent tube, messy for sure , but quite unlikely to cause any problems.

  7. I'd be concerned that they used the correct ATF in your vehicle.

Overfilling will cause fluid to blow out the breather. This many times will get on the exhaust and start a fire. Overfilling will also cause the ATF to foam or get bubbles. This will mess up the shift pattern but under most situations it won't cause damage if drained to the proper level.

Some cars get the level checked in "Park" while others need to be in "Neutral". They all need to be at operating temperature.
