HI, I'm going to Colorado on a self guided Muley hunt. I have drawn GMU Units 4, 441, 214, and 14

Any advice you can give me about these areas would be great.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

  1. You may be faced with rear presentations at long distance. Or quartering away moving shots way out there. It's mule deer, almost as big and spooky as elk, and in steep loose terrain to avoid hunters, once they know what season it is! A 270 with the big 150 grain bullets for deep bad-angle penetration is a good idea, but some experts use a 243 just to prove they can get close on broadside shots to pull it off. Anything bigger than a 270 will just make unnecessary recoil and s***w up your aim on the loose footing. Watch out which Hotels you check into! Maybe call up first and announce you are coming! (There might be Democrats.) Regards, Larry.

  2. bring a long range gun from 7mm mag to 338 mag using medium weight bullets i would use my 300 RUM using power level 3 150 grain bullets and get them out to about 200 yards so i dont blow them up but i would reccomend anything from 300 win mag to 300 RUM using 150 grainers for the bigger calibers and 165-180's for the smaller calibers and a scope of at least 3-9x32 magnification i would use the nikon monarch x already mounted on my 300 but i would reccoomend anything from 3-12x40 magnification upwards but dont go up too high because its not worth it or is it needed because your not shooting them at 1000 yards i would reccomend desert camo and a tan or brown windbreaker, a cowboy hat works great as a hat, for daywear (wear thin pants and a t short underneath)and a heavy jacket and thick pants and long jhons(shirt and pants) for night and i reccomend boots any higher than ankle boots and a pair of sneakers for relaxing and a pair of thin gloves and wear polyester nylon socks and boxers for underwear and bring a pair of good sunglasses and put 100% deet bugspray on you tp protect you from the tick farm fields their and one last tip about the rifles get a very light one because your going to be on a wild goose chase for those western monsters and those units are like a mulie assisted living home because the bucks are almost always old boys and are super wide

  3. Having only hunted 19, 20, and 6 I can't give you much advice but you might try Cabelas.com and go to their talk forums. There's a fair amount of people on the site from here in Colorado that have hunted other units.
