I have an almost 10 year old with Down syndrome and we are in the process of buying a new home. The yard will need to be fenced, front and back, as the house is pretty close to a main road. The problem is even tho my son has no idea of the danger leaving the yard could be, he is very capable of even geting into the pool locks that are on the community pools where you have to pull up on the suction type lever. What can I install that would be easy to the rest of the family to get in and out of a few to many times a day that he would not be able to open? I have thought of using a key or combination lock but feel his siblings, as most kids would, that it is too much of an inconvience and would just as easily scale the fence instead of messing with the lock. Which will only teach my son to attempt the same thing and make the whole fence idea worthless.

Please, any help???

Also, the siblings are older and taller than him.

  1. then you really need to focus on the older kids, when you get the lock with the key, tell them that they will get punished if they climb the fence as their younger brother will see and do it too..

  2. Hi

I have some information, but not with me (at work)  Please contact me directly LNL918@aol.com.  I just met a woman who is part of an organization who deals with children with down syndrom.  I will gladly give you the web site information and a contact. (

  3. Here is an adjustable height key lock...

I don't think you'll have much choice other than a key lock.  It would be the safest for him.

  4. that is not too much of an inconvenience considering it is a life and death safety matter for your 10 year old!
