Question:

Need advice on getting a job...?

I'm in desperate need of a job. And I am absolutely horrible at finding one. I have a good personality, I'm hardworking, I'm responsible, I dress conservatively.

But I cannot seem to find a job anywhere. I'm 17 and starting college. I've applied to a million places and not a single call back...

Any ideas?

  1. At 17 it's hard to get anything more than perhaps a waitress position fast.  Have you contacted your local employment office?  Dress in a suit, nylons & heels.  Black or dark gray is the best.  Get your nails done and make sure your hair is neat and no over done make-up.  Next, prepare your resume on nice stationary, ivory is the best, and obtain a list of references.  If any teachers or professors can give you a letter of reference all the better.  When you walk in to apply, ask for human resources and stand up to meet anyone.  Shake their hand and introduce yourself.  Let them know your situation, a student, _____ experience, ________ education, etc.  Career path is hopefully _______.  Let them know you are looking for an entry level position and  are willing to learn from anywhere in the company.  Even if you are not granted an interview from the first, write a letter to the HR department and simply state you submitted your resume in person and wanted to thank them in advance for reviewing your qualifications and would like to request a personal meeting to further discuss any positions which might currently be available.

It's not going to be an over night event.  The economy is slow and many with years of experience are having a hard time.  Your greatest asset is your youth and energy to learn and be a great employee and make them aware of that fact.

    Good Luck!

  3. When you go to your interviews, do you mention volunteer work you have done?  Honor societies you have been on, or clubs you have joined like the business club?  There might be a counselor or teacher that would give you a recommendation or a letter of reference, too.

The hardest part about a very first job is selling yourself and being confident.

  4. where do you live?

    try www.spherioncareers.com

  5. dress appropriately, hand in your application personally. Call the place 3 days after applying and ask if they have received it. Call back a week later and be persistent, show them that you really want the job. Unemployment is at its highest right now, 8% thanks to our dumbass president, thousands apply to each job, you need to stand out and show them that you are responsible.
