We moved into a duplex in March and every thing was going good. Then in July a city Inspector came to the door and told me that are Landlord has not paid to get the rental house Inspected in 3 years. Then he put a tag on are front door that said (this Building NOT To Be Occupied) and said that the Landlord was not aloud to move anyone in here. So it is now the middle of Aug. and the Landlord has not done anything the Inspector order him to do. My question is can the City make us move out and can we then Sue the Landlord for back rent from March seeing he Illegally moved us in here?

  1. My Brother in law works for the city and If you have to move out because of your Landlord they will give you time. I would too go after this guy,If there is one thing I hate is to move all the calling around, packing and then carrying all those box's and Furniture. Good Luck

  2. You need to consult a local attorney.

  3. No you can't yes he illegally moved you in there however that doesn't mean you get to live there rent free from the time you moved in.

  4. notify the landlord IN WRITING of the situation and sit tight. IF the city forces you out, then suing in small claims court is an option but most likely you won't win for back rent paid, but you should get ALL moving expenses paid, plus some bucks for damages due to negligence on the landlord's part. Small claims is free and make sure you keep copies of everything you send to the landlord. Do NOT rely on anything the landlord says verbally. Good luck.
