Need advise for a 5-day trip Rome-Venice by train.2/ 3? nights in Rome,what next before Venice?Rome must sees?

The best pass for Rome sightseeing? Should we take a guided tour? Should we take a sleeping car to Venice to save hotel costs? Can we include Florence for such a short time? Where should we spend night #4? Any advice for Venice, budget hotels/B&B?

Firenze is worth a trip to the cathedral if no where else.  

Also check out Vicenza for Palladian architecture.  As the ones in Venezia were not finished by him.

We went to Rome and Venice last year in Sept. Rome was okay but wish I had spent more time in Venice as I loved it so much. Some good sites that I used to get tips as far as where to stay, eat, see:

Venice is a nice place to just walk around and soak up the atmosphere. Rome is very educational. And they have the BEST gelato. :)
