Hi. My son is going to be 9 months old in 3 days. And in the last week me and my boyfriend just moved into a tiny one bedroom apartment. He used to do so good with going to bed and staying asleep until about 8 or 9. But now he wont go to bed he is cranky all day, (our walls are thin and w have neighbors, so i get embarrassed when he acts up and i feel obligated to say that I am sorry for my son crying) and he gets up at like 5 or 6. Is there anything that I can do to help him sleep longer or a least be less cranky. Thank you for you help.

  1. Babies are a fact of life. Stop worrying about it. If they are bothered by the noise they turn on a fan. You too can turn on a fan or white noise maker to drown out noise from your neighbors to help him sleep. He's just adjusting to his new surroundings and he senses the tension and stress from mom and dad. He'll settle into a routine in a couple of weeks.

  2. It's probably due to change.  Give him some time to get adjusted to the new environment. If that doesn't work maybe you should take him to the pediatrician.

  3. I agree with the other answerer...he is probably having a hard time adjusting.  Maybe strange noises are awakening him.  Try getting a sound machine that plays white noise (or you can use a radio station where there is only static.  I use sound machines with my children because we have a ranch style house and their bedrooms are very close to the living room.  I have it set on the waterfall sound and it helps block out all sorts of noises.  Good luck.

  4. put a fan or something loud in the room  it sooths them and they can hear less noise and dont wake up so early

  5. He probably just needs to adjust to the new enviornment.  If the walls are thin, are noises from other apartments waking him up?

All I can say is stay at it and he should adjust.  Try putting him to bed earlier.  I forget at what age it was, but both of mine went from being great sleepers to starting to give us some problems.

If he naps twice a day, you could try eliminating a nap.

  6. actually for babies, the more naps they have the better they sleep at night

this is a totally new environment for him, and if it is smaller, it will effect him just as it does adults as in 'where did my space go'

there is a special type of wallpaper you can buy that blocks out a lot of sound - that would be quite expensive though - you may look into maybe sheets of styrofoam/foam board that would block out some sounds - maybe in just one area where he is most of the time?

did he lose the use of his crib in this move (smaller place)? co-sleep?  give him time to adjust and he should be back to 'normal' in no time
