Question:

Need alternative to YouTube for kids?

My six year old loves getting on YouTube to search for videos of his favorite pasttime - trains! I didn't realize how many seemingly innocent videos were full of cussing and anger. I'm not a strict-by-the-book mother, but I don't like the language and demeaner that my son now uses. There's no parental control for youtube and I'm looking for kid-safe alternatives.

  1. Your six year old should have parental guidance WHENEVER  he is on the computer.

From Webkins, to Myspace, the internet is full of things that kids should not be messing with.  Use the parental controls that work the best... YOU!

  2. Just pay attention. If you don't want him to watch things, you have to put in effort and not just let a filter do it for you.

And youtube does have parental control, BTW.

I wouldn't automatically assume that youtube has caused your son's behaviour. Look at yourself, and your family. Is there "bad language" being used?

  3. kidzbop.com

  4. you tube is so cool....but so innapropriate. i only allow my child (who is 7) to search it with me and she is forbidded from reading the things people write. i would like to know of safe alternatives too. i look forward to seeing what people recommend.

  5. Try books.

From the juvenile literature section of the library.

    Or the juvenile non-fiction section.

  6. You should search ahead of time and watch the videos and bookmark them and he can only watch the videos that you have bookmarked.

And please FIRE the babysitter. Grand theft auto? forget the language---what about the content??? We're talking about a game that prostitutes wanted to ban because of its content. Specifically that a character could have s*x with a prositute and regain life (or health) but lose money---and then they could kill the prostitute and get the money back.

Any babysitter who allows a six year old to play a game where the main character's goal is to commit crime and the game is rated M or AO is not taking proper care of the child. Please find out what else your son has been exposed to by this person.

  7. I would try to find to find web sites that are geared for your child's age.Type in Thomas the Tank.com   or type in trains.Find a time when you can surf the net for suitable sites.Yahoo has a site for kids with games and activities that may at least offer a safe alternative to You tube. Almost all childrens shows can be found on the internet  and they provide safe  and appropriate activities and games. Yahoo for kids or yahooligans. Might I respectfully suggest that you check the rating on the video games. Some,as you've found out are very inappropriate for young kids  due to mature content (which can mean things such as language, violence and sexual content) It can be scary.

  8. You may not have to stop letting him youtube just simply do this, you said he loves trains so look up trains and watch all of the videos you think he would be interested in. Bad words or inappropriate don't let him watch it. Be in the room with him so he isn't tempted to watch those bad videos.
