Question:

Need an archaeology paper topic! Colonial America & Historic Archaeology?

I need to pick a topic for a research paper about any topic in archaeology but I'm having a hard time narrowing it down. I am interested in the role women and minorities played in colonial America as evidenced by archaeological findings. Is there a lot of source material available (enough for me to write 12 pages about?)--what kind of things should I be looking for?

  1. Roanoke comes to mind as a good project. It is a well studied mystery and there is an abundance of material for you to research. The women were the minority at that time, unless you want to look at the indigenous people. The web site is not the end all but it is a good start.

  2. The common assumption has been that colonial america had more men than women. Some archaeologists are finding evidence otherwise:

It would be easy to come up with 12 pages- why there was a disjunction in the ratio of men to women, or not, how it is researched, what it means.

  3. The Inca had a woman that played an important part during the period of spanish contact. I'll try to find her name.

Update: It was a Aztec woman sorry.  see wiki link
