Question:

Need an excuse for a day off?

I was on the verge of leaving uni, as I was getting so fed up, and didn't like my course, and had decided a new route of employment in that I would myself a new full-time job and work my way up in something I actually wanted to do.

Anyhow, I decided that it would be a bit silly to be so hasty as I only needed to pass 2 more classes in order to get my degree, so I took those classes in the first half of the term (leading up to Christmas).

I passed one class, but failed another, but I also managed to secure myself a job which I have been at for 6 months now. Anyhow, the resit examination for this class is on Monday, and I don't want to blow my chances of my degree by not attending, but I'd rather keep it to myself that I've had to do a re-sit (for my own personal reasons).

I have a scheduled day off on Wednesday, so I was going to ask to change this to Monday, but I need a really good excuse as I don't want to phone in sick!

  1. Tell them you're going to the doctor or dentist and there's no way you can reschedule.

  2. The more elaborate the lie the more likely you are to trip yourself up, bear in mind this is something you may have to repeat over & over again to your colleagues, could you really face that and the genuine sympathy for your fake bereavement?  Just tell them you have some personal business that needs to be attended to or you would like a long weekend, either that or tell the truth, they might be more accommodating if you are truthful & it does not have to go beyond yourself or your supervisor

  3. 1) tell them you have a medical appointment of some sort

    2) say you just have some "personal business" to attend to and that it can't be helped.

tell your employer that you need to take a half day off or leave work early to take care of some important personal business, and that it can't be helped. by saying personal business, that doesn't let people know what you will be doing but at the same time let's them know it's something important. if that doesn't work and your employer keeps on pressing you to answer, say you have to go in for an examination and leave it at that.

  4. Don't lie. Tell them you are taking a class and would like to have Mondays off instead of Wed.

  5. Say you need to day off because you are getting a quote for new tile. If they ask about it later say you changed your mind.

  6. Just say that you have an urgent family matter to attend to that cannot be put off, could you please swap rota off day.  It is not a good idea to fabricate a ficticious excuse unless you have a very good memory!  If they ask - which they probably wont - what the family matter is, just apologise and say it is very personal, but it really is essential for you to attend to it. This is still a lie as such, but in another way, it is not. Think about it.

  7. Are you living away from home?  If so, say the day before that your boiler just stopped working, and you need a half day as the guy is coming to fix it in the afternoon (I've used this one).

    OR

If you have to call in sick, just say you have a dental or doctor appointment.

Failing that, just say you have a personal family thing and need a half day, and offer to take it out of your paid leave.  They can't argue with it, and as you said it's personal they won't pry.

  8. Get a friend to phone you at work and say something like, your mother was rushed to hospital or had a fall or burnt herself badly. Or say your Mother had some bad news, you do not have to give details, just say it is personal and your mother does not want other people to know.Good luck.

  9. Tell them the truth, you will feel a lot bigger and better for it, and how can they refuse , it is your future that may benefit from.

If you are a real coward you could make up a funeral of a near relation etc and feel guilty forever!

  10. You need something random enough to be believable...what about..."I have been re-called to the doctors to repeat a smear test" If thats too personal for you what about saying you need the day off asyour kitchen has flooded and you have to wait for the landlord/electrician/plummer..youll have to call in on the morning of Wednesday for this one.

  11. you have family problems and need to go see someone out of town....

or u have to go to a funural that works

  12. someone is sick in the family and you need to go the hospital

or ask them for a day off without pay

in my last job i had 4 weeks holiday a year but also had 2 weeks without pay, so had 6 weeks altogether.

  13. You don't need one. Just say you have some essential business that requires you attention and that should be fine. Most employers would be happy to allow a member of staff the opportunity to advance their qualifications and so what if you failed first time round at least you are resitting it. If they are not happy then tough just get another job.

    Good luck with your exam.

  14. Your mother has an appointment at the eye doctor (optometrist). Your mother can't drive home afterwards because her eyes will be dilated. She needs you to drive here home safely. Leave work early.
