Need an introduction to car audio?

I am buying a car soon and am looking to get some car audio. I know nothing about it, but know that I want a subwoofer and will need an amplifier. I will also probably upgrade from the factory head unit. How much does a good setup cost? Can i do it myself? Shoul i goto retail stored for the equipment or ebay? HELP!

well if you want warranties go retail and if it is a new car i would strongly advise having a shop install it many do offer free basic labor plus the cost of any addtional parts and adapters.

a good setup will cost you around 1,000. but it truly depends on what brands you go with, the amount of subs, stereo type, and... you get the idea.

i could give you some sites ive used for stereos, subs, amps, batteries, and even cables. all are brand new and at very cheap prices. i would not recommend you buying from ebay. if something goes wrong, they will probably not help you.

can you do it yourself?  maby, but remember to take your time, plan everything ahead of time and use common sense so your car doesnt catch on fire.

since this is your first time with everything, i suggest you go to a car audio shop and ask them this.  it gets way too in depth to be answered on here.  can you do it?  yes.  can you also mess it up like crazy and "blow up" your car?  yes.  will it cost 300-400 dollars?  yes.  will it cost over 3000 dollars?  yes.

around a grand would be a good setup. if your going to get subs and an amp get your deck upgraded too. its gonna make your system perform better. and go for brands like jl audio and kicker. and when choosing amps look for ones with the stamp that says CEA 2006 compliant. those are the brands that show their real results and arent over rating their gear. id have a pro do it if you dont kno anythnig about it. i kno car audio and it still took me a long while to put mine in
