i have been married to my husband for almost 3yrs and i need to file my paper work to be able to get my work permit and social security card. the lawyer i have gave me all the paper work to send to him because he is currently overseas serving in the army,he needs a copy of his citizenship and also his tax returns.but the problem is that he is always going to camp and he does not have the time to send it. i am trying to find out if there is anyway i can get the work permit and social security card without those 2 information and go ahead and sign the paper work for him. pls i am in maryland if u know of any good lawyer i will really appreciate it. thanks

  1. You have been married for 3 yrs and now that he is overseas its urgent and he doesn't have time to send them, sounds a little fishy to me....No you cannot sign the paperwork for him, that is illegal in the US.

  2. Exactly what is your status at this time?  You can't possibly be living in the USA, legally, for 3 years and married to a US citizen without applying for a Green Card.

  3. Yes - this does sound "fishy". The three year rule applies to upgrading from Permanent Residency (Green Card) to Citizenship. If you are legitimate, then his citizenship proof and tax returns were submitted to the CIS just after your wedding. This being th case, your Green Card allows you to work.

  4. Do you have your green card yet?  I looked at the work permit application and don't see that you need tax returns/proof of spouse's citizenship for it.
