Need assistance on negative Powers (The Method)?

How do I work out the answer for negative powers like 4^-2x6^-2 for example? I need to find out how the negative powers differ from the postative?

x^-2 = 1/(x^2)

x^-3 = 1/(x^3)

is 1/a^n. So,

4^-2*6^-2=

(1/4^2)(1/6^2)=

1/(16*36)=
