Either dressy, dark blue or black jeans or a pair of khakis (any color), paired with a shirt that breathes and allows the guy to move comfortably. Either a golf-style shirt or a button-front shirt is good. A T-shirt is too casual, even a nice one. Avoid loud colors or busy prints unless he wants to discuss his wardrobe all evening.

Khaki pants, shiny brown shoes or new deck shoesand a short sleeved oxford shirt.  You could have a nice tee shirt underneath so that if it got hot, you could  unbotton the shirt.  Take a blazer in the car in case it's cool or more dressy.
