im trying to do this without putting a curtain and it has to be CHEAP and EASY. 89" by 100" opening in a wall like as it looks. its the opening saperation to my living room. i want to close it up for a room mate. but it does have to have some sort of an opening for them to get in and out. private enough too. I thought about accordion doors but they are not long enough only 80" in height and up to 36" in length and costume made ones are too expensive. The 9 inch gap would be very hard to close up I don’t even know how to start with that one. If you have any ideas that are simple and easy and cheap please help me out. Measurements from floor to ceiling are 103.75inches PLEASE HELP MEEEEEEE! My email is mzmail9@yahoo.com

  1. Here's an idea.

Put a baton top and bottom of the opening one on floor one on ceiling. Make the ceiling one at least  2" deep! - the floor one - 1"

Fit one to the wall on one side - where you need a door, and one to match on the other side.

Buy flooring grade chipboard - the type with long tonge and groove edges - that is LONGER than your floor ceiling hight.

Cut the edge off one, and start with this against the far wall - Trim top and bottom to fit. Leave 1 1/4 gap at the top

    Hold temporarily with 4 screws.

Continue along like this with more full-hight boards. The last one - make sure it has flat edges. Use loose pin hinges to hang it as a door on the wall baton.

Now for the clever bit. - Fit another batton on the other side, but remove the initial screws as you do. -Leave a gap at the "door" to allow it to open. Fit a gate latch - and a privacy bolt.

This is virtually a floor, and is substantial enough to reduce noise.Paint it the same as your walls, you could even add coving to the top!  Hang heavy rugs on it for effect and to help reduce noise.

When you need to remove it, Remove rugs, Remove pins on hinges - and remove door, Slide each board slightly towards the door area, and lift clear of the bottom rail. Continue with other boards.

You could unscrew the batons as well - leaving just a few s***w holes as traces, or leave them there for a quick set up.

  2. sounds like you can stud or frame the area off with 2x4 studs and make a doorway opening.

inside the opening you could purchase a prefab door.

a little lumber and sheet rock you'll be in business

  3. you can put old sheets up on the top frame of the doorway or you could hang up beads.my friend did that, and its really effective. But if you want privacy, then put both.=;D

  4. Will you need a noise barrier?

  5. Gosh, wouldn't it be a heck ova lot easier to just move?

  6. Easy? OK, how about those partition walls that are more commonly used in schools and offices? http://www.hertzfurniture.com/Portable-P...

Cheap? Maybe a book case? Or a china cabinet? (you don't have to store china in it.)  Add a door, and with a little luck stuff will fit together.

Fast/cheap and simple: I have to assume the opening is 89" high, and 100 wide. Ask someone who is sort of handy for advice, and maybe for help with this one:

    2 8 foot 2X4

    1 8 foot 1X4

2 sheets  4 foot by 8 foot 1/2 inch particle board (don't use plywood, it will warp. I will call it plywood from here on)

    6 hinges

    3-4 slide locks.

On each side of the opening mount 1 of the 2X4s (cut to fit) to the wall, this will be to mount the hinges to. Cut both sheets of plywood to fit (cut the 8 foot side down to 88 1/2 inches.) attach 3 hinges on one of the 88 1/2 in sides of on sheet of plywood spaced evenly, then repeat for the other side.

Now mount the other side of the hinges on 1 sheet to one of the 2X4s, then repeat for the other side. There should be a 1-2 inch gap between the sheets of plywood once they are up. attach the 1X4 to one of the sheets of plywood covering the gap (don't attach it to both sheets). Now you should have 2 doors swinging freely. Attach 1 slide lock at the top of the 1X4 set up to go into the ceiling, and repeat at the bottom to go into the floor. Drill holes for the lock to slide into (the ceiling might need a small piece of scrap plywood or 1X4 attached to the ceiling for reinforcement.) Slide the locks in, then attach the other lock to the 2 doors to latch them together.

    Paint/wallpaper/decorate to suit.

Doing it this way gives 2 doors, when you will probably only open 1 except when moving furniture. It might not be convenient at times because of the primary door being large, but it's very cheap. ~$50 in the US
