Ok well I am applying for financial aid and the college will not accept my w-2 as proof of income and they want to see my tax return. I only filed a 1040ez and some how I think my parent filed a 1040a for my survivor benefit just so that I could receive the stimulus payment which I still have not gotten. The college would like a copy of my "tax return" which I never got because I only got a check and nothing else with it. They also said that they would take a copy of my 1040ez that was completed but it had to be the same one that was sent in to the irs. The problem is that there is no way possible to get a copy of my 1040ez because the IRS is terrible and the line just keeps dropping me. I have a copy of the 1040a that was filed does anybody know if that would be good enough? I was also going to just redo a 1040ez and copy it and submit that the only problem is I do not remember the date that I had written on it. Is it possible to just recreate one without actually submitting it to the IRS and only sending a copy to the college? They are threatening to cancel everything simply because they will not give me financial aid without a copy of my completed tax return and they have left me with 2 days to find one. Can anybody help?

  1. I just had to do this exact same thing today - and actual copy is $39, but you can get a transcript for FREE! Just call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, and they will FAX you a copy, so you'll get it right away!!

    Good luck!

  2. If you filed a 1040EZ and your parents filed a 1040A in your name, one of them would have rejected - any one person can only file one return in any given year.  This probably explains why you didn't get a stimulus check, if the 1040EZ was the one that was accepted.

The form you send in IS your tax return.  The check you get is your reFUND which is not what they need and has nothing to do with your financial aid.  To get a transcript of your return, see http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc156.html

Just redoing a 1040EZ and giving them that is looking for trouble, especially since if two returns were filed for you, then you already have a problem.  But if you got the refund you were expecting from the 1040EZ, then apparently that was the one that was accepted, the 1040A was rejected which makes it like that was never even filed.  So do NOT just give the 1040a to your school.  You need to get a copy or transcript of the 1040EZ - you should always keep a copy, I guess you know that now.

Keep trying to call, and when you do get through, as them to fax it to you or to your school.  The reason the IRS lines are so jammed is so many people are calling about the stimulus, many because they sent something in wrong as you and your parents apparently did from what you say in your question.

  3. Topic 156 - Copy of Your Tax Return – How to Get One

If you need an actual copy of your return, you should complete and mail Form 4506 (PDF), Request for Copy of Tax Return, along with a check or money order for $ 39.00 per tax year made payable to the "United States Treasury". Allow 60 calendar days to receive your copies.

Most needs for tax return information can be met with a computer print of your return information. This is known as a transcript. A Return transcript will show all original information from the return as filed. If you need to have all changes and charges and credits you can request a tax Account transcript. Transcripts are provided free of charge. These transcripts may be acceptable substitutes for an actual copy of the return by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and lending agencies for student loans and mortgages.

You can obtain a transcript by calling (800)–829–1040 or by completing and mailing Form 4506-T (PDF), Request for Transcript of Tax Return, to the address listed in the instructions to request all types of transcript verification of non-filing, and wage/income information.

Transcripts will be mailed directly to you, and should be received within two weeks after the IRS gets your request. Transcripts can be mailed to a third party if you specify this on Form 4506-T, however, you must sign and date the form giving your consent for the disclosure.

FINANCIAL AID ACCEPTS THE TRANSCRIPT, you don't need the actual copy of the tax return, you can obtain a copy by visiting your local IRS office since you need the transcript ASAP. Or if you have a fax machine call IRS at 1800-829-1040 and they will fax but you must be near the fax and you have to acknowledge receipt.
