yea u stick computer plug into modem then another free plug into modem then to jack

Yes, you need a modem to attach your computer to your telephone line.

Back in the day, modems had 2 RJ-11 phone jacks, one that plugged into the wall, and one that you plugged a phone into (i.e. it would "pass through" the phone line).  Now-a-days, most modems only have one jack and you have to buy and adaptor (from any hardware store) that has one male RJ-11 jack and two female RJ-11 jacks in them to split/share the line.

You can't use the phone and the computer/modem at the same time.  DSL modems use RJ-45 jacks (like phone jacks, only bigger) and can use the phone line at the same time as you talk on the phone.
