  1. Be aware there are many families with family rumors of descent from Pocahontas.  Wayne Newton being one person to make that claim.  Her descent is well documented. I have read that she had many sisters all with the same name. This may be the cause of the many claims.

  2. Pocahontas real name was Matoaka. The nickname "Pocahontas" means "naughty one" or "spoiled child."

The legend is that she saved John Smith from being clubbed to death was first reported by John Smith some 17 years later, after her death. When Pocahontas met John Smith during her London visit, she snubbed him and refused to speak to him.

Her father was Powhatan, (real name: Wahunsonacock) chief of the Powhatan Nation. This was a confederation of some 30 tribes and was very powerful. The Powhatan Nation is still active today. Smith did spend a winter with the tribe but afterwards never reported the incident that made him and Pocahontas so famous. Originally both sides saw advantages in being allies. Both used each other to their own ends. Powhatan eventually refused to sell any more food and relations became bad.

In 1612, some 5 years after the date Smith would later report as his "rescue" Pocahontas was held for a year in Jamestown. There John Rolfe, then 28 became interested in her. They were married in April 1614 and Pocahontas took the name Rebecca Rolfe. She then gave birth to Thomas Rolfe her son.

In 1616 the family sailed to England. This is when she met John Smith and refused to speak to him. In March of 1617 they sailed from England to America. However, Pocahontas became sick and was put ashore at Gravesend, England. She died there on March 21, 1617, at the age of 21. Her death was probably due to smallpox. A ninth generation descendant was Edith Wilson, the wife of Woodrow Wilson; a 1/612 relation.

Her father died the next year, 1618, and the nation was decimated from sickness.

Rolfe is best know for his accomplishment of making tobacco a commercial and profitable crop.

Here are some websites. The Powhatan Nation site: http://www.powhatan.org/pocc.html, contains some of the best information about her and her descendants. Most of the information about her was obtained there.
