Release date for NFS Most Wanted also announced as well as the reason for Criterion’s focus on the Need for Speed games over the Burnout series.
Electronic Arts seems to want to regain some lost ground in the arcade racing market as it threw its considerable weight behind the live demo of Need for Speed: Most Wanted during the E3 Press Conference.
In fact, Most Wanted was one of just a few games to receive the live demo treatment along with Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3, meaning that EA were clearly out to make an impression on the audience that the latest instalment in the series is one to be taken seriously.
The demo showed Craig Sullivan, Criterion’s creative director, race a yellow Porsche around the in-game city as he attempted to avoid being arrested by the pursuing police vehicles, which he managed to do, albeit barely.
Criterion is a development studio many will have heard of as they were the studio behind the Burnout games, with their most recent outing in the Burnout universe being the open world racer, Burnout Paradise.
However, since the release of Paradise the studio has been focusing on the Need for Speed series. Their title, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, was an instant hit and really brought the series back to life. It turns out that the studio feel the need to do that again as Need for Speed: The Run, which was released after Hot Pursuit, did not make as big an impact with gamers as the publisher, EA, would have liked.
Sullivan explained that the Run’s poor performance was one of the reasons for their focus on ensuring that Most Wanted succeeded. He said, “It’s more a case of wanting to get Need for Speed back on its feet after last year.”
One can expect another Burnout game somewhere down the line yet for the time being it seems that Need for Speed: Most Wanted is the closet one can get to it.
EA also announced the release date for the game. Gamers can expect to outrun the law on the 30th of October.
