I'm a low income widow with a son that has ADHD. I have found a school out of my state that specializes in learning disabilities. The cost of this school is out of my reach, so I'm looking for financial aid. The state is North Carolina.

  1. I would contact the school and ask them what options you have for paying for the school.  Is it a private k-12 school or a private college?

If it is a private college, file the fafsa at www.fafsa.ed.gov, you cannot get enough federal aid to pay for the cost of a private college education, but if the FAFSA shows that your family has need, they may be able to offer you additinal assistance.

If it is a private k-12 school, the school may have scholarships for which you can apply.  Sallie Mae makes private loans for private school, but the interest rate will be high.

I live in NC and all of the programs to help with school cost are for the residents of NC.  In order to get assistance from your state, you need to contact the State Dept. of Education in the state you live in, to see what assistance they offer that students can use out of state.

Your best bet, contact the school, they will have the best resources for you.  Good luck to you and your son.
