Question:

Need game ideas for students?

I need ideas on how to alter games that children already know so that they can learn about other cultures through playing. Any ideas on which popular childhood games can be altered and how to alter them to include other cultures?

  1. okay I'm a 7th grade student, i don't know how old the students are you teach but i usually don't like when teachers play these "games" because they are usually not fun (though little kids will be entertained by anything =D) anyway have you ever heard of the game "Scene It?" its like a DVD trivia game. You can make one on imovie or Windows movie maker use clips from movies or pictures that show different cultures and ask which it is. (i did this for an english project and surprisingly everyone paid attention) if your not good with computers or don't have a DVD player you could try to alter a game of CLUE to instead of trying to figure out the criminal try to figure out where he's from or whatever.

  2. What a great idea!  I'll try to brainstorm a little with you...

What age children are we talking about?  If I understand correctly, you're trying to teach them through the game, not exercise their skills on subjects they already know about?

One idea is to use the game "memory" and create cards that match according to something cultural.  For example, you could put a kimono and sushi on two cards or the Great Wall and a dragon on two cards, and they each match because they're parts of Japanese and Chinese culture.  (This would be a very simple idea for very young children.)

You could create a candyland type board game where instead of each card being a color, each card could have something to do with the cultures you are trying to teach them about and the squares on the board could have the country or religion or ethnic names on them.  That way, the students would have to learn which cultural topic goes with each group in order to know where to advance to.

Have you ever seen the game Apples to Apples?  It's a wonderful and fun game adults play where you are given several noun cards and several adjective cards, and each round one person becomes the judge and subjectively chooses their favorite matched pair from all the players' submissions.  If the students are older, you could create for them a modified version of this game using all nouns and adjectives having to do with the cultures they are learning about.

Hope this helps.  If you have more details on the age of the students and what the cultures are, that might help increase the numbers of ideas others could come up with for you.

  3. I've noticed a lot of teachers have been taking jeopordy, wheel of fortune, and deal or no deal and altering them into school learning techniques. you can also take scene it and alter the questions or other survey games such as are you smarter than a fifth grader... there are many different ways to alter them...

    for deal or no deal

you may have the students answer a question if they get it right they may choose a case or box whatever you choose to use and they get maybe a prize or extra credit point until all cases are gone

wheel of fortune is similar but each time they spin they must also answer a question correctly to choose a letter

    hope this helps good luck!
