Need gerbil housing advice pls!!!!!!!?

Question

i just got 2 wonderful creatures called gerbils yesterday and they were in a tamporaril cage last night but today i moved them to a big 30 gallon tank =] my dad bought them a wheel water bottle food dish and 2 of those balls that u put them in and they roll on them. also he made them a little gerbil house out of wood. i connected the paper towel roll core to the gerbil house and they love running in and out the house using the roll lol but the bad thing is they never and i mean NEVER roll in their balls or roll on the wheel we got them (its plastic all around with no bar slots) so their tail cant get caught in it. why dont they roll in the wheel or ball? maybe they're scared? maybe the stress makes them scared? i really dunno but i was playing with them from 9 to like 1 last nite lol but not like holding them from 9 to 1 but at diff times i wud go watch t.v. with them and hold them and stuff and i love them so tell me if im doing everything rite pls it would be greatly appreciated =]]]

we bought our first two gerbils yesterday (saturday) and mine went to sleep for an hour, woke up grabed some oats took them back to his home and he cracked them all open
mine is a baby and only just got the hang of the wheel and i put him in the ball but the ball was a bit hevier than him so he tried running up the side to move the ball but he could barly move it so im gonna wait till he is older.

if yours are babies then they might be to small to move the ball like mine and might not get the hang of the wheel yet.
