Need handicapped van for 19 yr old CP daughter. Any organizations to help with funding in Alabama?

My daughter wants to drive, has CP, can only use one hand. Will need joystick and automatic whlchair lift, anyone know of any organizations to help with this? She is 19 very bright, desires career in web design or related. As independent as possible. We are in Alabama, any input will be much appreciated. Thanks

  1. You should also check with your local dealership in regards to installing special components for the vehicle and what the cost is. Having the research and the cost before hand you can then approach local agencies to give them the cost you will need from them (shared among other charities).


  2. Department of Rehab (Vocational Rehabilitation) would be my first stop.  She should also be receiving an SSI check.   I know Chrysler has some special program and there are many conversion van companies that sell used vans that have already been converted.

  3. There is an organization in Alabama, not sure which city. It's called 'kid one transport' and they transport children to and from medical care.

    They operate from donations and funds.

    THey might can let you know where you can go for help.

  4. Contact the March of Dimes and also call the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services.  The phone number is 334-281-8780.
