I am having a party and I will be having a texas hold em cash game going on as well- I would like some pointers on how to structure the game...I want it to be small stakes, like having the blinds be $1 and $2...any suggestions would be appreciated

  1. first of all have good weighted poker chips, those cheap plastic's ones ruin the game, have a few decks of cards, people want to change decks when their luck is down. have your stakes setup before hand like minimum buy ins and max buy ins and set the the limits before the game starts, ie no limit, $2-$6 and so on.

try to avoid dealers choice, but if you allow it, limit it to the main ones, 7 stud, omaha,  hold em, and you can add in HI-LO

  2. Having the stakes at $1 - $2 is not really low stakes for a home game if your playing for cash. Some people, ecspecialy if they are not used to the game or more playing for fun, will not want to put in more than $20 - $40 bucks. This is not alot of hands at $1 - $2. If someone gets pocket Kings first hand, I'm sorry but theres a good chance all that money is going in on the first hand.

If you have poker chips, figure out the denomination of chips for a cheap buy in. You will probably have better luck starting the blinds at .25 cent - .50 cent. Have buy ins be in $5 or $10 increments, with a cap. This way you might entice some "dead money" into the game if its only $5 to get some chips.

If your playing a cash style of game, theres no need to raise the blinds. And let people buy in or cash out whenever.

Something else you could try. Start a side pot where everyone puts in $1. Highest hand at the end of the night takes the whole thing.

  3. Just make sure you've got enough in the way of chips (if you plan to use chips), a dealer button, etc.

$1/$2 isn't too bad, if you're talking about small stakes cash games. You probably want to cap the amount of chips people can buy at, say, $50. If you have one guy sit down with $100 when the rest sit down with $25 it's not going to be as fun.

...Unless that guy's a fish, of course. Then, invite him again. :-)
