I need a car to get a job and to go to College ( 1st year) im 17 will be 18 in July, My grandmother want me to have her car, its a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu, she just got married so dont really drive it. The only thing is she still owes $4000 on it and want me to pay that and help her pay the insurance on the car. And the car has a water leak which my grandmother said i would have to put water in the car every 2 days or so. My mom dont think this is a good idea. She wants me to get a better car for cheaper. What do you think I should do? Or what do you think about this? Please help. Im able to get the car in about 2 weeks bc she is out of town right now and when she gets back she will have to clean the car out for me to drive.

  1. I know your grandmother is trying to help you out, but you can do a h**l of a lot better for $4,000. Maybe she'd be willing to sign it over to you and let you trade it in for something a little better?

  2. I've gone through the similiar thing -- still a little bit painful,here is the resource help me out.http://car-insurance.easyideas4u.info/ca...

  3. yeah it doesnt seem like its reliable so i would not choose it also most come with a 6 cylinder motor which can be expensive if you are driving around town. get a slightly used four cylinder car...

  4. First - you don't put water in the car.  You ALWAYS add coolant.  Putting water is a good way to damage the engine (crack the engine in the winter / rust out the engine all the time).

    Second, check out  KBB.com And price the car.  Right now your need is more important than your grandmother's needs (because you don't have lot of money to fix it, etc.)

    Good Luck...

    P.S.  Your mom probably knows something about the car, so maybe it is good to take her advice too.

    === UPDATE ====

    Normally family is worth helping.  But you are just a student and you need to make sound financial decision.  Get another car that will be problem free.

  5. Don't take GMa's car.  That's too much of a liability.  Why should u pay her car payments?  That's retarded.  Tell GMa thanks but f*** your Malibu.

  6. don't buy this car.

    for $4,000

    look for

    98 Acura CL, 98 Ford Mustang V6, 98 Honda Accord or Civic, 98 Nissan Frontier or Pathfinder, 98 Subaru Impreza or Legacy, 98 -00 Toyota Corolla or Echo 00

    these are all reliable and will last longer than other cars in this price range.
