Hello, I play for a rugby team who is currently 2nd in the south high school division. Our club has been state champions 4 years running so I am trying to compete for a spot in the line up as a fly/scrum half. I am currently 15 years old and I am trying to find ways to work on my physical strength and speed. I am 5' 4" and not very strong although I can tackle. My cutting, fundamentals and technique are great but I really need to build on my strength and a little bit on my speed. I know I still have room to grow height wise but how should I approach training? All answers are welcome and appreciated.

  1. if you can ask for a personal trainer. they know what to research to get you in the best shape for rugby. if you can't do that, make sure you work on your leg and ankle strength, that can help you get out of a tackle. make sure you take a run at the most 5 days a week. mix up your exercises so you don't get bored with it. eat foods rich in protein, calcium, and energy (bananas are excellent for it!!). Get a rugby ball and practise doing some drills. practise side stepping a tackle, fakes, and the straight arm to stop a person from tackling you.

P.S. i didn't say it above but it is good to work on your arm strength, especially shoulders!

  2. well what i did and got unreal resutl is get a sandbag aabout 50 to 100lb and gor spirt upstairs or a hill and squat that will increase your speed

  3. Join a weight training club. Join track and field or go jogging every day. Eat healthy and consume lots of protein you should be ready in no time.
