Need help buying a boat.?

I've been looking to purchase a boat but I'm not sure which type of boat would best suit my needs...

I'd like the boat to hold 3 passengers.

I plan to use the boat for fishing in a local reservoir but I would also like to use it in the New Jersey Bay area.

What type of boat should I select? Jon? Semi-V? or something else?

Let me know. Thanks!

  1. A small Semi V would be a good choice.

  2. Carlo got right I might ad ,would`nt go with john boat.  find a used semi v-hull glass boat..now my most valuable advice -- shop around until you find one that has an almost new motor on it. with plenty of HP -50 to 70  --( will pull skiers and toys too)

. motors are expensive. thats why you shop for a boat- with new motor--if  has old motor dont even go look at it!- bigger motor is better for bay.. then you mount  a little 9.9 HP next to it for putting around while fishing and fuel economy..-that's the set up.  also for the bay you will want a boat with a win shield- to keep you dry-and for fishing you want a walk thru..if you dont know what that is --there is an opening in the win shield to "walk through" to the bow for anchoring , and fishing --they have seats in the bow too. makes more room for fishing--you want a" walk thru" for sure. that will make the 17 footer twice as roomy for 4 people  etc. very desirable! you can find all this in one boat  if you search. they  have made tons of them -- go to boat trader magazine . do the work shopping, for this and you will enjoy your boat and your freinds will love it too -they  better-- its your boat and they buy the fuel-and every eats the fish!!

  3. An aluminum john boat is pretty utilitarian, and light enough to muscle around. a fiberglass boat won't be as cold when the weather and water get nippy. For 4 people consider 17 feet or better, with at least 50 hp. A whaler would be a stable unsinkable easily planed possibility if you are not going out in rough water (wet), otherwise go for a vee hull with a cuddy to keep some dry things. Don't buy it till you try it!  It should be easily trailer-able if that's what you intend, and make sure your vehicle can handle the load safely. Don't skimp on your anchor and anchor rode!
