Need help buying my first surfboard!?

Question

I am a noobie surfer, but I really enjoy it.

I am looking to get my first surf board.

I am on a tight college budget, so I was wondering what type of board is good for me?

I was looking at a 6'6 Thruster surfboard.

I'm getting the hang of surfing pretty well.

I am 5'9 and weigh from 160-165 (varies)

Is that board okay for me to use for a year or two?

If not, what do you guys recommend?

ok. well a 6'6" thruster is a great size board for someone who is wants to learn to shortboard but make sure it has enough boyancy. but i have to tell you from experience, shortboarding is much harder than it looks. i learned to surf on my 6'4" shortboard and it took me about 10 times longer to learn to ride on it than it would have taken to ride on a mini-mal or funboard. if you want to take the time to learn on a shortboard, go for it. its great once you learn. but if you want to catch a lot more waves especially on those flat days, i would suggest getting a mini-mal, funboard, or longboard. i hopw this helps. have fun surfing and good luck!

oh yeah. a shortboard is not a good beginner board at all so if you do get one , dont give up and dont get frustrated. it will come with time and practice

If you've been riding a shortboard, and have been doing well on it, why not pick up the 6'6 ? No one can recommend a board online. Knowledgeable surfer friends, who know your break, or a surf shop are better advisers. A 6'6 is a pretty long shortboard. There's no reason why you couldn't use it for a few years. Check with your buddies, and visit a surfshop in your area to see what they recommend for you. You don't have to buy the board there. Just get the right advice before you buy. Stay away from Chinese boards, and make sure you buy a board handmade in the USA.

I would get a 6'6 fish. It is a little bit wider and thicker to help catch waves.
