As a overview

The internet comes from my verizon modem that also acts as a router. The ip range is from .4 to .200. The modem(it is in dhcp mode) then hooks up to a switch which then has two rangeplus N-linksys routers.

1)does a switch distribute ip adress also?

2)if i change the linksys routers ip to static and change them to .2 and .3, which is outside the modem's ip range, would it fix any networking problems

3) Please provide ur advise on how to fix the network

  1. 1) no a switch doesnt give out ips.

    2) just plug them in and leave them be. and it'll give you problems if you assign them outside the routers config.

BTW if your trying to use the 2 linksys routers as switches... it's relatively simple to make them act only as access points and then they don't need ips.

  2. ok, look at this

VERIZON > MODEM (DHCP) > Switch (captures only 1 IP) (also DHCP) > Linksys router x2 (captures 2 IP from Switch)

Switches such as Netgear and Cisco and most can distribute Ips just like a router.

If you set static IP on both linksys, make sure it is within the Switch's IP range and if possible set switch from DHCP to Static on LAN then add the two IPs of both Linksys router.

You can MAc lock them and allow only 2 IPs for security.

Remember, the switch will accept Its 1 single IP from the Modem using DHCP but will give static LAN IPs to the Linksys routers.
