Question:

Need help connecting my laptop to my Linksys wireless router....?

My Dell laptop was working fine (for almost two years) with my Linksys WRT-54AG wireless router when all of a sudden it won't display web pages. The wireless connection shows it has an excellent connection (54MBPS) but for some reason it says the website cannot be displayed. I tried repairing the wireless connection but it didn't work.

I even hard wired the laptop to the router and it still didn't work. I know I have internet because the connection I used is wired to my desktop and it accesses the internet just fine.

Any help is appreciated....

  1. Try rebooting your ROUTER and LAPTOP and waiting 1 minute. Restarting your router will clear the cache. This usually repairs a broken connection.

Make sure you are in range of the router. Sometimes the signal can be lost if you are too far away.

  2. Reset everything. Unplug the power to the router and modem, wait 30 seconds, plug in the modem, wait 20 seconds, plug in the router. Turn on the laptop.

  3. Assuming you have tried various websites and they all don't work, then chances are it's not your laptop.  Linksys routers have been known to need a reset every once in awhile.

Just go to the back of the router and hit the reset switch and the router should reboot.  Don't hold down the reset for longer than a couple of seconds or you'll reset it back to factory settings!  Give the router a few seconds to book and try repairing your wireless connection.

If things still don't work, then try resetting your modem.  The modems I have used don't have a reset switch, so had to unplug and re-plug power cable a few seconds later.  Rebooting a modem takes longer, so walk away and give a few minutes.

If this still doesn't work, then you may have a problem with your service provider.  To save you the problem of the #1 step they will try with you is to connect the modem directly to your laptop.  Unplug the network cable that connects the modem to the router and plug that cable into your laptop.  Reboot your computer (for a couple of reasons which I won't get into) and try your sites.  If they work, then problem with your router.  If you still don't get anything, problem with service provider.  Call them and see if they can help.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Try resetting the router, unplug it wait 10-30 seconds and plug it back in.
