Help!!! My pateral grandparents are buried in Darmstadt, Germany, although I'm not 100% sure which cemetary.(But I think I know.) Before he died, I know my Father had to periodically pay to have the grave maintained so it wouldn't be "recycled", as it the custom.

Well, between moving and my Dad dying several years ago, I'm thinking it might be time to pay for upkeep again, but I have no idea who or what agency to contact, or how.

Can anyone help me--- Please???? I would like for it to still be there when I make it back to Darmstadt in a few years.....

  1. you should call the city hall of Darmstadt or something and im sure they have something where they can type their grandparents name into and they will tell you which cemetary they are burried at and then you can call the cementary and they will do the upkeep.

  2. Normally you contact the administration of the city in your case the would be Darmstadt.

There should be something like 'Friedhofsamt'

If you feel I can be of any help mail me through my profile.

Some links:city of Darmstadt: in both German and English

Found a link for the administration of cemeteries in Darmstadt in German only ....hope that helps anyway

EDIT thanks for the thumbs down  I have missed my personal troll already. In case that was the second answerer the thumb down is not from me.

  3. You will need to get hold of the grave certificate first which should have been in possession of your father. It is called "Grabbrief". This document provides the legal right to act. Is is comparable to the register of being a land proprietor. Without the Grabbrief it will be very difficult for you to prove that you are the "owner". However, if more than 15 years have gone buy since the last payment the grave is likely to be home to someone else now.
