Question:

Need help deciding what martial arts i want to learn?

does anyone know about any video or book showing different aspects of several martial arts styles so that i may make my decision a bit easier. i think that i would like a style with a more aggressive approach, or one with the combinations of different styles... anyhow thanks.

  1. I teach Krav Maga, it is fun, but it is hard work physically and not for everyone.  Books are great, but they are the second experience of another.

    Go to a few classes, any place worthwhile will give you a free week, so take advantage of this kind of thing, find out where you will fit in, interact with the instructors and senior students.

    The other decision is combat art v. martial art, which do you want.  Combat arts are about survivability and lethality, weapons training begins from class 1 on.  Martial arts have a more traditional system of teaching.

    I enjoy both combat arts and Chinese Martial arts, they are by far the most elegant.

  3. I like karate, all of the forms start off from the same base.

    I like it .

    But really it depends on what you want to focus on ?

    All round? Karate

    Kicks? Taek Won Do

    Holds, grappling? Jujitsu

    Elbows, knees? Muay Thai

    Aggressive strikes?  Kempo or Mag Karvia (spelling is wrong)

    Defensive self protection- Kung Fu, Judo

  5. Don't waste your money on books or videos.  There's way too much free info on the net.  Here's how you do your homework:

    1.  Look in the yellow pages.  What kind of martial arts are around?  write some down, like "karate" "mixed martial arts (MMA)" "Brazilian Ju-jitsu (bbj)" "wing chun" "krav maga" "tae kwon do", etc.

    2.  A lot of good teachers may not be in the phone book.  Use google to search for "martial arts class" in your city.  Write down some styles.

    3.  Look on youtube.  Do searches for the things you found in the phone book.  What looks interesting to you?  what looks like the most fun to practice?

    4. Use wikipedia.  Search for and read more about the histories and backgrounds of the styles you liked on youtube.

    5. Visit the schools that are available.  You'll probably know the school you want to train when you see it.
