My department is looking into adding another bloodhound. Where can I find a good breeder or maybe one already trained? What is the cost or is there organizations who donatebloodhounds? If we buy a puppy are they hard to train?

  1. My Daddy grew uo in Fairfax, Oklahoma and the vet there raised bloodhounds. Or call Gill Nectoux as he is a deerhunter and knows about good bloodhounds too, Gill is in Shreveport LA. Run an ad in the paper. Call Animal Rescue.

  2. The Du page County Sheriffs Office has a Bloodhound that's in Illinois.

we've used it before - but I have no other details - call them.

  3. Not sure where you are located... I know of bloodhounds and handlers thru out the country.

A good start would be to contact your local Bloodhound Club

With bloodhounds, you can take a dog in rescue and train for SAR.  You'd save a dog and let it do what it does best- trail.

It's not comparable to the work of german shephards, etc.... bloodhounds can't do that type of work... but for finding lost people there is no nose better than the bloodhounds.

    Are they hard to train?

You don't train a bloodhound to trail... it's more training the handler to understand the dog and the dog to understand you.  Like with any dog training, you have to find someone who knows what they're doing...but it's relatively easy.  The bigger problem is finding people who will lay trails, letting the trail age then finding the person.  It can take someone's entire day (you cannot lay a trail yourself- since you'd be working the dog)

I've done some basic SAR training with my dogs and they love it... and it's great watching the dog do what it loves.
