I am going to get a dog soon and I really want it to be a RESCUE one. I love havanese dogs so a site with rescue havanese dogs would be great!! I have looked and all I found was petfinder.com, and there are rescue dogs on there but they are a little pricey....oh yeah, and a rescue site that isn't so pricey would be great! Thanks in advance!!

  1. The prices on petfinder are pretty much the average rescue cost. Remember the rescue has had to take care of the dog before you get it. Chances are they have to spay/neuter the dog as well as get it UTD on shots. They may have to do dental work, maybe even treat an illness. They also microchip too. On average the shelter I am with often puts $1,000 or more into each and every dog we adopt out for $200. I think that's a real good deal for the person adopting.

  2. Have you researched the cost of having a dog? Consider this: If you don't have much money, how will you pay for vet bills, healthy food, toys, etc for your new dog? If your dog became ill or injured, would you be able to cover the cost of care, or would you end up releasing your dog to a shelter?

As other people have said, rescue dogs are spayed or neutered, up to date on shots, and have had a heartworm check. All of this costs the rescue money, and they pass some of that cost on to the adopter. If you BUY a dog from a breeder (or, heaven forbid, a pet store), you will have to cover all these costs yourself, on top of the price you pay for the dog itself. And I can guarantee that if you want a Havanese, you will pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for the dog from a breeder, because they're not that common.

It's admirable that you want to adopt a rescue dog, but it doesn't sound as if you are in a position financially right now to do so. If you have love to give a dog, why not consider volunteering with a rescue group, to share some of that love with homeless dogs?

  3. lets compare:

i adopted a dog from a kill shelter in Ohio. for 90.00 he has all his shots, neutered and transported to me in TN.

but all my rescues (3 surrenders and 4 dumped pups), when i take them in to get all their shots and spayed/neutered, with a shelter discount, it's like 300.00 per pup.

so ANY adoption fee you're charged is a hugediscount. if 100.00 is too much, get a fish.

  4. Go to http://petfinder.com & simply put in your zip code to find a rescue near you.

  5. What is pricey to you?  When you get a dog from rescue, it is spayed or neutered, all shots are up to date, it is Heartworm free.  All medical treatment has been done to the dog and it's ready for a new forever home.  How much would it cost to get all of that done to a dog from a shelter or a new puppy.  Most rescues charge what it cost to get the dog whole again.  Rescues cannot even break even as they never get enough out of adopting out a dog for what it cost them to FIX it.

  6. www.petfinder.com .. its an adoption fee. Around $100...thats not pricey.

  7. How much exactly is "pricey"? They're really not that expensive considering what the dog comes with. Most dogs are vaccinated, neutered, dewormed, and microchipped at a minimum.

If you can't pay the fee you should wait a while until you have more money. Dogs aren't cheap.

  8. Search in a engine (Your city, pet shelter) and search from there.

  9. It's a good thing to be concerned about price from websites-- earlier today there was a post about fraudulant rescues on petfinder.com. "Rescues" shouldn't charge an arm and a leg!

Depending on where you live, Havanese are still pretty rare! I looked into getting one. Try your local shelters, maybe they can let you know if they have a dog like that come in! My local shelter charges $55 for a neutered dog and $82 for an intact dog.

  10. petfinder.com

you can select a certain breed/age and more to narrow your search, as well as how far you want it to search in your area.

most of the animals listed on the site are housed in rescues/shelters, but a few are also animals just needing homes (found my dog on petfinder, the owners were moving and couldn't take her...) so the adoption fees may vary.

i also found this site, a rescue specifically for havanese, it may be worth checking out!

    hope this helps!

  11. petfinder.com is a great site!

  12. I think it's great you want to adopt from a rescue! But if you think the $$ is a bit much, you should also think about your grooming bill. That type of dog requires prof grooming. And should be groomed every 4 to 6 weeks. This will norm run you about $45 to $50. So before you adopt you should also consider money you will be spending after you adopt. Just a thought.

    Good Luck!

  13. 100.00 - 150 should not be to much to ask for the shelters need LOTS of help doing all the gr8 stuff that they do.. all you have to do is watch animal planet to see what all can go into rescuing a animal..
