Need help finding a job in the child care field? Something flexible?

I'm 20 years old and going to school for Early Childhood Education. I recently left a job at a childcare center where I have been working since I was 16 years old.

I left in order to give myself to opportunity to focus on my education, however I would still like to have some type of income.

When I am finished with my education I have full intentions of returning to this childcare center (i left on very good terms)

I am looking for a flexible job working with children (pre-school aged prefered, or elementary aged.)

I'd love to do something like put my name in with a babysitting agency (its something working with children on an as-needed-basis) however there are a lot of crazy people in this world and I would not feel comfortable going into a strangers home.

I'm not sure what my options are, or how to find out what jobs match what I'm looking for.

  1. Try the YWCA or YMCA or even before and after school programs that might run by the public schools in your community. Good luck.

  2. Go to an agency as they vet clients, if you are in college can you work in a setting around them times I run a child care setting and am always looking for helpers now and again to cover sick, holidays etc

  3. The simple fact that you WANT to work with children is awesome! Excited Teachers and Child Care Workers are in high demand these days!!

Babysitting is a great opportunity for you to set your own hours and choose your own clients. You may want to post a (free) ad on Craigslist in your area or in a newspaper or other online reference (in your area).

I have been in child care for over 15 years. I also babysit for extra income and did exactly what I suggested. (post an ad in my area, with my skills, availability and rates). Great child care is hard to find and in HIGH demand... especially for sick care, center closed days and after school care.

INTERVIEW potential clients, do not assume. Mapquest their address....ask for references...meet the parents & kids at their home, before you agree to work for them!!!

Ask the Director or Teachers at the child care center that you have good-standings with and see what they suggest. Also, look in your local paper/online for child care jobs.

Hope this helps! Kudos on your desires for education & child care!!!
