Need help finding out the name of a tropical plant I saw today?

i seen a plant today in the grocery store. . .and it said was tropical plant there was no actual name. They look like large hardy leaves that come up like spikes from the soil. Does anyone know the name????

  1. Phormiums have spear shaped leaves, that grow from soil level, at the base of the plant, it may have been one of these.  Depending on where you are, it may not be hardy, though it will definitely cope with several degrees of freezing - they are originally from New Zealand.

    They come in greens, reds, purples and variegated varieties.  Just a chance that it was one of these that you saw.  Otherwise if you can edit your question with leaf colouring height etc, it would help identifying it for you.

    As a houseplant, it could have been a Mother in Laws Tongue plant - which has green/cream variegated foliage.
